Fencing is a Modern Sport.
Fencing is a fine combat sport that provides lifetime opportunities for participation and creative expression. Captain Jack Sparrow, Luke Skywalker, Aragorn – who has not dreamed of walking side by side with these swordsmen, confident of being able to handle any situation, of being the master of ones own fate? This need not be an idle dream. Learning is within anyone's grasp.
Fencing is a year-round sport with many attractive attributes. It can be conducted either indoors or outdoors on any kind of surface; boys and girls as well as men and women can enjoy the sport; people of any age, body build. Or temperament can experience success; and a fencing practice area may be as small as a living room or as large as all outdoors.
Once their interest is captured, people pursue fencing for the same reasons they pursue many other activities, such as singing, painting, playing musical instruments, solving mathematical problems, piloting airplanes or boats, or playing basketball. These activities satisfy their need to use their abilities as significant, creative, self-reliant, and confident beings.
Many life lessons can be learned on the fencing strip. Fencing provides opportunities to reduce tensions and increase satisfactions, and it helps develop discipline and self-confidence. It also teaches and demonstrates that
• Hard work can be satisfying.
• Exercise is important for total fitness.
• One can be defeated and then bounce back to victory.
• Failure is merely a detour to success.
• Aggressive feelings can be channeled into higher emotional attitudes.
• In confronting many problem situations, one can learn to come up with solutions.
